Backup Strategy

Backups are the last line of defense for Jenkins. Many teams discover their backups are useless only after a failure.

Why Jenkins Backups Matter

Without reliable backups:

  • Controller crashes cause data loss
  • Upgrades cannot be rolled back
  • Security incidents become catastrophic
  • Disaster recovery is impossible

Backups are not optional for production Jenkins.

What Must Be Backed Up

Critical Jenkins data includes:

  • JENKINS_HOME
  • Job configurations
  • Pipeline definitions
  • Credentials (encrypted)
  • Plugin configurations
  • User and RBAC settings

If JENKINS_HOME is lost, Jenkins is effectively lost.

What Should NOT Be Backed Up

Avoid backing up:

  • Workspace directories
  • Build logs older than retention
  • Tool caches (Maven, npm)
  • Temporary files

These increase backup size and restore time.

Backup Granularity

Common approaches:

  • Full backups (simple, slower)
  • Incremental backups (faster, complex)
  • Snapshot-based backups (VM / volume)

Choose based on recovery needs.

Backup Frequency

Typical guidelines:

  • Daily full backup
  • Hourly incremental (if supported)
  • Pre-upgrade backups mandatory

Frequency should match business risk.

Backup Storage

Best practices:

  • Store backups off the controller
  • Use immutable storage if possible
  • Encrypt backups at rest
  • Test storage access regularly

Never store backups only on the Jenkins node.

Backup Automation

Backups should be:

  • Automated
  • Scheduled
  • Logged
  • Monitored

Manual backups are unreliable.

Backup Validation

Rules:

  • Regularly verify backup integrity
  • Perform test restores
  • Validate critical jobs after restore

An untested backup is not a backup.

Common Backup Failures

  • Backing up wrong directories
  • No restore testing
  • Backups stored locally
  • No monitoring or alerting

Best Practices

  • Back up JENKINS_HOME
  • Exclude transient data
  • Automate and monitor backups
  • Test restores periodically
  • Document backup procedures
